The illusion of separateness

We are inextricably connected through visible and invisible forces. While on a grand scale it is easy to observe our interconnectedness the problem lies when we believe the connection stops there.

We are the wave that has forgotten it is the ocean.

When we think and act as if we are separate and different we isolate and starve ourselves from our most precious resource, our shared humanity. If we get cut do we not all bleed? If we do not have access to food or water do we not all feel hunger and thirst? Are we not all naked beneath our clothes? We are constantly presented with the opportunity to shift our perceptions from what makes us different to what makes us similar. By doing this we begin to see others as an extension of ourselves, we see that beyond what we can perceive with our senses there is an essential nature, pure and innocent, that we all share.

Through others we know ourselves.

The illusion of control

Experience teaches us that no matter how hard we try sometimes things don’t go as planned. Despite this knowledge, it can still be difficult to accept that we cannot control everything in our lives. How much control do we actually have? In reality, our sphere of control is smaller than we think.

Focus on what you can control, accept that which you cannot.

We can’t control what happens to us but we can control how we respond to it. We have the choice to accept and learn from the situation or resist and be trapped by it. By accepting our current situation, as pleasant or painful as it may be, we release it and allow space for a new experience to emerge. This process requires that we become present with what is instead of distracted by what should have been. Our point of power is always in the present moment, not the unknown future or the unchangeable past.

We become who we are.

The illusion of certainty

As humans, it is important that we are able to generate a sense of certainty in order to feel safe. However life can quickly, easily and most importantly unexpectedly be disrupted.

What does this say about the stability and safety of the personal, social and environmental structures we live in? Is anything ever really certain? Our subjective sense of certainty, while comforting, does not comply with the dynamic and ever-changing nature of reality. But this need not scare us.

If nothing is certain then everything is possible.

Knowing this can be a blessing and a curse. Within limitless possibility exists both the “good” and the “bad” and of course, we would all prefer the former over the latter but focusing or striving for one over the other can only lead to disappointment. Forcing our will upon reality only works when it works. Life is an ever-moving stream of potential and possibilities. Are you flowing with the current or against it? This is not to say we shouldn’t consider the consequences of our actions or plan for a better future, on the contrary, careful life design is essential for achieving meaning and fulfillment. Rather, let us make uncertainty our friend and let it teach us to appreciate what we have now because it could all be taken away from us in an instant.

Every moment is precious, not because it is given but because it may be taken.

Understand the Why

It’s easy to get lost and stuck in fears, doubts and uncertainties. A clear Why, like a personal vision / mission statement, can help bring us back into focus. Regardless of what we think and how we feel, whether we’re up or down, coming back to the Why encourages us to continue and keep moving towards the fulfillment of our vision.

Step into the Shadow

The shadow is a part of our unconscious mind which holds all that we are ashamed of and all that we have repressed within ourselves. When someone else triggers us we can ask: Am I judging this person for doing something I am ashamed of doing or thinking / thought of doing? Is this person exhibiting a quality that I have denied within myself? Shadow work therefore is treating these people as conduits for the transformation of unconscious material into conscious awareness.

Now is all there is

Our minds are excellent instruments for dealing with the present moment. It is also true that the minds ability to reflect upon the past and plan for the future can be advantageous. However when get stuck on dwelling on the past or pining for or fearing an imagined future the mind can become a hindrance more than a help. The reality is that the past and future only exist in our minds. Life rather is a continuous stream of present moment experiences. If we want to release ourselves from the past or build a better future then we can only do that in the present moment. Our point of power is ALWAYS in the present moment, not stuck in the past or waiting for us in the future.

Perception is deception

We paint the world with our thoughts, feelings and imprints of our past experiences. In other words, what we perceive outside is a mirror of what’s happening inside. Every experience is an opportunity to connect deeper with our inner narrative and bring us closer to our truth, beyond perception.

Awareness is the first step

Awareness is a muscle, it needs strengthening. With practice the mind can be trained to become more and more aware of itself therefore allowing one to better decide how to respond in particular situations. With greater awareness comes greater choice and with greater choice comes true power and the potential for personal liberation.
